One day last week, I think, I read in a section of the crappy local paper (which my office gets) about the U.S. being a dumping ground for plastics which leach toxins such as phthalates, including items such as teething rings for babies, since we haven't outright banned phthalate-containing plastics. Vinyl flooring can be really nasty too. Countries manufacture unsafe stuff for sale here which won't allow it for sale in their own countries.

I don't have any kids, nor plan on laying any sticky tiles. So ....I'm a little slow. I just made a connection to something closer to home.

General, nonpanicky-toned article about phthalate plasticizers and safety/health concerns. (http://www.eng.buffalo.edu/Courses/ce435/2001ZGu/Phthalate_Plasticizers/PhthalatePlasticizersReport.htm)

...and a pretty good sex-toy specific guide (http://www.womynsware.com/Side%20Menu/BuyerbeWomynsWare).

From the guide: Silicone toys that are clearly stated to be silicone do not have phthalates. Language that mentions silicone while not stating something is silicone: anybody's guess what it's made out of.

Phthalates are a plastic softener. They are also a common ingredient in some nail polish.

uh, yeah, but you might care about some of your organs and stuff, right?

one reply and it's you smarting off.....

I was the second reply, I think.

And if my organs are damaged, it wont be because I occasionally use sex toys, but because I drink far too much and smoke noxious substances.

Well, true, but it's no big sacrifice to toss out a cheap sex toy. Some of the toxin levels a German study found in sex toys were a thousand times the upper limit considered dangerous for other items like baby teething and dog chewtoys. If I'd had ANY IDEA the nonregulation of sex toys meant the cheap novelty variety would be DRIPPING carcinogens....you're better off with a rubber dog bone.

I only own one sex toy anyway.

How much did it cost you again?

Bone. Huh huh.

Well, I told you not to use it as a hammer.

I never used it as a hammer. I used it to beat baby seals to death in Manitoba.

I know, "smarting off" is more or less synonymous. I just thought a handful more people would appreciate the info, since their toy collections are far more extensive than yours is likely to ever be.

They sell disposable vibrating condoms here. Hm.
On cock rings, Ill stick to what I have already, although some of the selection are probably brimful of the noxious goodies. But how much can you really absorb from something the width of a large elastic band? And I have some made of Stainless Steel aswell. But they arent as good.

Personally, I was always a bit bothered that many soft sex toys have anonymous ingredients- aside from "non-latex". Anyways, I stopped using jelly toys when I left one of them in my hot car when OmN and I went on a trip and it lost its colour (and sucked up others from surrounding objects).

this was posted to the altporn community a little while back:

"greenpeace netherlands has publicised a recent text that proves conclusively that jelly sex toys contain (some of them up to 30%) phthalates.

http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/contentlookup.cfm?&ucidparam=20060908125938&MenuPoint=D-C-D

these materials are safe for use. non-porous/completely sterilizable: pyrex, steel, acrylic, pure silicone. mostly non-porous but still non-toxic: elastomer. porous but non-toxic (therefore prone to cause yeast or urinary tract infections, as well as transmit stds): cyberskin, latex, leather.

if it smells like chemicals, get rid of it. it's that simple. even the vapors can be toxic.

for further information, feel free to contact me at sue@mytulip.com

please repost this to any other porn/sex blogs."
